This temple hall is located in one of the most picturesque places in Japan, Matsushima. It came to be called Godaido because of the 5 statues of Myoo placed here after the hall's construction in 807. The treasured images are only displayed to the public every 33 years.
Open only during winter, this restaurant serves grilled oyster in the shell. During a specified time limit, diners can eat their fill of oysters from the Matsushima sea, nurtured by a flow of abundant minerals from the mountains.
Kanrantei means to watch ripples on the water. In the past, this building was used to house the feudal lord and his daughter, and to receive guests. Alcove and partition paintings are drawn in gorgeous, rich colors and have been designated national important cultural properties. Initially called Tsukimi Goten, an "Otsukimi no Kai" (moon-viewing gathering) is held in September when the moon is particularly beautiful.
Enormous cliffs of vertical bluffs standing 80m_150m stretch for more than 3km, presenting a vast and impressive panoramic view. The towering rock face is an imposing figure resembling a folding screen. During seasons of new greenery and autumn colors, it is enveloped in amazing natural beauty.
There are approximately 120 stores including brand name fashions and souvenir shops selling products from all 6 prefectures in Tohoku. The largest Ferris wheel in Tohoku affords a panoramic view of Sendai Port, and visitors can dine on foods such as seafood and Sendai’s local dish, beef tongue. Take advantage of free parking that accommodates around 2,000 vehicles, then relax and enjoy the shopping and dining experience.
Mogami Gorge is a well-known site for viewing autumn leaves in Yamagata and is said to be the most picturesque place along the Mogami River. The mountain landscape to the left and right that can be seen from the Mogami River changes throughout the four seasons, while Shiraito Falls (120m tall) is one of the best 100 waterfalls in Japan. Both are magnificent sights.
Legend says that the famous military commander, Taira no Masakado, dedicated and donated the approx. 29m-high, 5-storey wooden pagoda. It is said to be the oldest in Tohoku and has been designated a national treasure. Nearby, there is a giant "jiji (old man) cedar tree" thought to be 1,000 years old. Mt. Haguro is a sight worth seeing.
This scenic road is symbolic of Yamagata、 which once prospered as a mecca of mountain worship. The road、 along which practitioners of mountain asceticism walked in the past、 has beautiful new greenery and fall foliage、 and has been selected as one of the best 100 roads in Japan. Bonjigawa Gorge is near Roadside Station Gassan. Kome-no-Ko no Taki Falls is behind Kome-no-Ko no Taki Drive-in.
Sagae produces the most roses in Japan, and those roses are used in a rose bath that has proved popular. The hot spring water, which has a slight viscous feel, is extremely popular for being refreshing and for its skin-beautifying effects. *Note: The rose bath is only available in 2 locations, Kappo Ryokan Yoshimoto (Japanese-style restaurant and inn; TEL: 0237-84-2138) and Hotel Symphony Annex (TEL: 0237-83-1222). Be sure to inquire in advance, as the bath's availability differs.
At Zao, you can go mountain climbing and sightseeing in summer, and ski and view frost-covered trees in winter. The winter frost-covered trees, called "snow monsters," are especially well known. The sight of them rising out of the mountain slope when illuminated is absolutely magical!
The open-air baths were created beside a mountain stream amid the ski slopes at the highest point in the hot spring district. The expansive onsen has 2 baths each for men and women, and is large enough to accommodate 200 people at once. The baths are open from mid April to early November since they are linked to the ski slope course in winter.
One of the best scenic spots in Japan, this gorgeous ravine has stunning spring greenery and fall foliage. Nature's tapestry of blazing crimson-red colors captivates visitors during the autumn-leaf viewing season from around late October to early November.
This seafood market is located right next to Sakata Port. The fish shop on the 1st floor has an array of fresh, delicious fish just caught in the Japan Sea. The restaurant on the 2nd floor affords a view of Sakata Port and serves popular dishes such as a set meal of fresh fish and seafood atop rice at reasonable prices.
Established in 1990, throughout the year visitors can enjoy rich landscapes such as cherry and grape orchards, and wintry scenery. You can also purchase local specialty products and foods.
This sightseeing toll road links Bandai Kogen and Bandai-Azuma Skyline. The scenic point, Sanko Paradise is popular for the view it affords of the three Urabandai lakes: Lake Hibara, Lake Akimoto, and Lake Onogawa. At Nakatsugawa Gorge encountered along the way, you can delight in the amazing beauty of the gorge during seasons showcasing spring greenery and fall leaves.
The beautiful gorge full of natural beauty runs from Mt. Azuma to Lake Akimoto. Known as a scenic spot for viewing autumn colors, it is cool and comfortable even in summer. The gorge is just 15 min. from the Resthouse, and a trekking course follows along the gorge from the banks of Lake Akimoto.
A manmade lake created by damming up Tsurunuma River, Lake Hatori boasts the largest reservoir area and capacity in Japan. "Hatori" is the name of a former community that lies at the bottom of the lake. There are camping sites and cycling courses in the vicinity, which has been developed as a resort area.
The unique double helix slope is an exceptional feature of this hexagonal, 3-storey pagoda. The construction of separate one-way ascending/descending passages is a globally rare architectural style. In the past, it is said there were 33 Kanon images along the slope.
Pass through an avenue of cedar trees more than 100 years old and Yamamoto Fudoson appears. Its origin story began when Kobo Daishi built a fire altar and prayed for the exorcism of the evil spirits dwelling on Mt. Yamizo during his pilgrimage in Tohoku. Next door is Yamamoto Park where you can fully enjoy nature throughout the year. (There is also a walkway that follows along the gorge.)
Over a period of a million years, nature created this white rock face through repeated erosion and weathering. The contrast between it and the flowering trees forms a stunningly beautiful landscape. "Hetsuri" means "dangerous cliffs" in the local dialect.
