From the gondola, you can leisurely gaze down on the fall foliage and enjoy the vast panoramic view. The v-shaped gorge is covered in an expansive virgin beech forest, and the autumn leaves stretching along the prefectural road to Geto Onsen are beautiful.
Matsukawa is famous for having the first geothermal power generation in Japan. The landscape is lovely along Matsukawa Gorge, which is enveloped in a virgin forest of beech and oak trees. An enormous granite rock has been eroded into step-like formations so that it appears as if numerous tatami mats have been laid down right up close to the opposite shore. The pure water creates sheet-like waterfalls as it flows. In the autumn, this gorge is a scenic spot for viewing fall foliage.
This mansion was built by a businessman from Iwate prefecture. The greenery viewed from the corridor soothes the spirit, and you can enjoy tea and Japanese sweets served inside. In the fall, the colored leaves are illuminated.
This picturesque gorge has an abundance of nature, including the largest Meoto (husband and wife) rocks in Japan created by erosion, Ogami Rock and Megami Rock, and Ohogake (eroded cliff). As you approach Basen Bridge, you'll see the spectacular fall colors of deciduous trees along the gorge.

Komata Gorge has been designated a prefectural place of scenic beauty and a natural monument. It can be reached by means including the sightseeing boat for Lake Taihei.
Ani Ski Resort is on Mt. Moriyoshi, a 1,454m-high mountain known for "snow monsters" that was selected as one of the best 100 flower mountains. There is an incredible view from the 6-person gondola that runs 3.5km and takes 15 min. to reach the mountaintop. The spectacular 360° panoramic vista looks out onto the sparkling, snow-covered Ani mountains. You can also enjoy walking in the mountainous heights up to the 8th station.
Near a scenic lake where Canadian canoe and triathlon competitions are held, this facility displays materials dating up until the dam was created and introduces artifacts excavated during construction of the dam. An expansive view of the dam can be seen from the observation platform, and the cafe next door sells locally grown vegetables and sweets made by local farmers.
The landscape surrounding Lake Taihei variously changes throughout the four seasons. The manmade lake measures 30km around and 58m deep. It is fed by 13 small and large mountain streams and is home to numerous fish. Visitors are encouraged to take the sightseeing boat around the lake.
The town has an approx. 700-year history of large drums, and Takanosu has an exhibit that includes the largest drum in the world (diameter: 3.71m) that is recorded in the Guinness World Records, as well as drums from various countries. There are drum-related souvenirs at the shop next door selling local products.
The rail bike runs along an old railway line built to transport goods for a mine. The natural landscape is invigorating with cherry blossoms and fresh greenery, and the railway bridge stretching over a clear stream provides a bit of a thrill.
The dog breed, Akita dog is a natural treasure that is characterized by triangular ears, a large body, and a temperate personality. In addition to materials on display in the hall, there are also items on sale such as Akita dog chains and t-shirts. Visitors can see actual Akita Inu from late April to late November.
Hakka Pass is located at the tip of a crater lake that sunk due to volcanic activity. It affords a fantastic view. At its front, you can see the southern Hakkoda mountains beyond the rim of the crater lake, Lake Towada.
Cows and sheep live quietly on this farmland spanning approx. 100 hectares. There is a caf_ serving cheese dishes, a Mongolian BBQ house, and a facility offering hands-on experiences making cheese and sausages (reservations required).
This beautiful waterfall flows down in 3 tiers from a height of 181m with a width of 7m. The magnificent fall in Tohoku is not to be missed and has been selected as one of the best 100 waterfalls in Japan. The vista amid fall foliage is especially breathtaking.
This waterfall is the largest in scale in Zao. It's name stems from the fact that there is a stone statue of the Buddhist deity, Fudo Myoo at the base of the waterfall. When the area is thick with greenery, the fast-flowing water splits into 3 falls, while around the time autumn leaves are turning the waterfall has become more restrained.
